Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed the Holidays.
I was thinking a lot this week about what my resolutions would be for 2020. For some reason no ideas were coming to me and then I eventually realized that I don’t really want to set any for the year. For the most part, despite having some areas I wish to improve, I don’t have many benchmarks I’m looking to reach in 2020. Even the things I wrote down on a list for myself a few weeks ago I don’t particularly want to hold myself accountable for in 2020. If I achieve them great if I don’t, no sweat. While not specific resolutions or measurable goals, there are some areas that I do want to focus on in the next year–more generic goals and intentions for the year. These are the things that really matter to me.
1. Reading.
I love to read but I rarely have time to do it, and since I’m looking to take more classes and focus more on my career path this year, I’ll probably have even less time moving forward. But there are breaks where I can probably sneak in a chapter here and there to make it more manageable for me and my schedule.
2. Focus on my career.
I don’t know exactly what I want to do, but I hope to make some kind of move forward in the next year. I’m making an effort to pivot into a field that I think I would like, and I want to really hone in on that this year between classes, informational interviews, gaining some hands on experience, and applying to jobs. I just want to feel in December 2020 that I’ve made some kind of progress in my career, which is an area I’ve felt sort of stagnant in for the last few years.
3. Not spending (aka saving) money.
I really need to watch my expenses over the next year. I’ve written about this before, but I will likely need to buy a car in the next year or so, so I will need to save up for a down payment. I am also working on putting away money towards an international vacation at the end of the year. Those are just two large sums I need to save up, and I also have some smaller but larger-than-normal expenses coming up. I have a minimum savings goal I’m working towards, but ideally I’d like to save more than that–as much as possible.
4. Add cardio into my workouts.
I’ve been doing this lately and I’ve noticed that my body has been responding really well. I tend to focus on strength training, but it’s important to mix it up with cardio workouts and not only focus on one area or the other. Even if I just keep up with what I’ve been doing lately for the whole year I’ll consider this goal met.
5. Simplify life by focusing on what’s important.
I’m going to have to be very intentional with what I spend my money and time on in the next year. Because I’ll have to consider things more carefully, I’ll be forced to think about what I really want, and what brings something positive into my life. This in turn will help me focus on only the things that are really important to me, and will hopefully simplify my life in the process.
What are you focusing on in 2020? Let me know in the comments!
Wishing you all a happy and healthy 2020!
